Zumba classes can involve high-energy choreography, crowded halls and licensed music – three things insurers and venue owners care about a great deal. Many studios, gyms and community halls won't let you teach without proof of public liability cover, and as a Zumba instructor you have a music-licensing obligation (PPL) that most other fitness professionals don't need to think about. This guide covers the cover you need, what it costs, and the providers who specialise in insuring Zumba teachers.

What insurance do you need as a Zumba instructor?

Public liability insurance (PL) This is essential. Public liability insurance provides protection if a participant is injured, or if someone's property gets damaged in your class – whether that's as a result of a slip during a routine, a collision between participants, or a damaged hall floor. Venues typically require £1m–£5m of public liability cover, but specialist policies offer up to £10m.

Professional indemnity (PI) This type of insurance covers legal claims arising from your instruction – for example, choreography or progression that a participant thinks has caused an injury. Professional indemnity insurance is usually bundled with public liability on specialist dance-fitness policies.

Equipment cover Sound systems, microphones and merchandise are Zumba instructors' tools of the trade, and are often carried between venues. This is exactly the theft-and-damage profile that equipment insurance exists for. Remember it's important to check unattended-vehicle conditions in insurance policies.

Personal accident cover (PA) Teaching Zumba is a physically demanding job, and there is no sick pay beyond the statutory minimum if you're self-employed. For that reason, insurance that pays out if you are injured at work is worth considering.

Employers' liability (EL) If anyone assists or covers classes for you, employers' liability insurance is a legal requirement.

Music Playing recorded music in classes requires a PPL licence (or using cleared alternatives). It's not insurance, but it's a compliance cost the membership-bodies who compete with insurance companies usually bundle into their offering. EMD UK membership includes a discounted PPL licence alongside £10m public liability, making it a logical package for Zumba specifically.

Insurers will expect that you can show a Zumba training certificate. Note that some (like EMD UK) distinguish between instructors holding a Level 2 Exercise to Music qualification, and those with branded Zumba training only, with different membership tiers for each. Variations – Aqua Zumba, Zumba Gold, Zumba Kids – should each be declared to your insurer; Salon Gold's policy, for example, names them explicitly.

How much does Zumba instructor insurance cost?

We last crunched the numbers in June 2026. EMD UK costs from £51 per year including membership, £10m public liability and the PPL discount; Protectivity prices start at £3.86 per month; Insure4Sport covers dance-fitness within its discounted multi-sport instructor policies; Simply Business quotes Zumba instructors from around £6 per month. Most instructors will pay £45–£120/year depending on add-ons. The key variables that change the cost are: the size and volume of classes you teach; which venues you use; the value of your equipment; and whether you teach other disciplines.

Which route suits whom? If Zumba is your main focus and you play recorded music (i.e. almost everyone), EMD UK's bundle is hard to beat on total cost of compliance. If you teach Zumba as one of several disciplines, a multi-activity policy (Insure4Sport, Protectivity) avoids paying twice. Branded-training-only instructors should check tier eligibility before buying anywhere.

What customers say: review data

Protectivity 4.8/5 on Trustpilot (~900+); Insure4Sport 4.7/5 (~5,000); Simply Business 4.2/5 (~7,300, 9/10 on Feefo). EMD UK and FitPro, as membership bodies, lack comparable review volumes – judge them on the package contents. (Checked June 2026.)

Independent expert ratings

Which? and Fairer Finance don't rate this niche of small business insurance. Underwriter strength and explicit wording for your Zumba variations are the practical things you can check to make sure you are buying a quality product.

Key takeaway

Get public liability with professional indemnity, declare every Zumba variation and any other classes you teach, and sort out your PPL licence – ideally in one move via a membership that bundles it. The cheapest standalone policy isn't the cheapest total package if you're paying the full price for music licensing separately.
